Health Benefits of Calcium

I won't talk much about the importance of calcium, as almost all of you know how important it is for a healthy body. The importance of calcium for bones is a known

fact. Calcium has other health benefits also.

It protects your heart and protects you from high blood pressure. Research suggests that if you don't get enough calcium in your diet, you're likely to be overweight.

It helps in keeping the extra weight off.

Calcium also improves premenstrual moods. In a study conducted in St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, it has been found that getting enough calcium

can ease the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In this study of 497 women, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, half took 600

mg supplements of calcium carbonate twice a day, while half took a placebo. The women who took calcium experienced significantly fewer symptoms of premenstrual

syndrome in two months and improved even more after three months.

It protects you from colon cancer.

High calcium intakes or high calcium absorption were previously thought to contribute to the development of kidney stones, but more recent studies show that high

Dietary calcium intakes actually decrease the risk for kidney stones.

Good hub, UH. I remember hearing that something in the neighborhood of 90% of the world's population is lactose intolerant. I'm not sure if that really is the actual number, but even 80% is pretty high, considering that the USDA recommends that we consume so much dairy is questionable, don't you think? I only bring this up because of the correlation of this hub to dairy (best source of calcium) and lactose intolerance.

Great informative hub as always. I had no idea that there are so many alternative sources of calcium!

Hey UH, didn't know that there are lots of fruits with calcium. Maybe I can switch them for milk (I'm lactose intolerant).

@dohn, 90%???? That's so high. Uhm, I'm considered lactose intolerant but my 'intolerance' is a mild case (I think) because it just acts up during specific times (like when I consumed milk before I have anything solid to eat). So as long as I'm not traveling, I take a chance and drink milk :). But for others, I hear they get literally stomach aches when drinking milk. Maybe soy substitutes? Or taking in calcium-rich vitamins and minerals?

There are many other fruits also that contain calcium but a bit less than the ones mentioned above. :)
