Introduction
I know a lot has been written about getting backlinks here. Despite knowing this I can't resist writing on this topic. Please note, you don't have to spend a single penny to get these back-links. So, this article is about getting easy backlinks for free. I am sure you will find this article a bit different from the ones present on the web.
Email requests to webmasters
I know you have read about this a large number of times but still there is something missing. You can not get a back-link or a link exchange from quality and related sites by simply shooting an email to the webmaster. Do it my way to gain success. First put a link to the site you want to exchange links with on a page of your site, the page should have some content on it and must have some traffic. The page you are putting a link on must also be easily accessible by search engine bots. After you have done this, wait for a few days and let the webmaster realize he is getting traffic from your site. Once he sees traffic coming to his site from a page, he will visit the page and analyze it. After a few days write to him that you want to exchange links with him and you will be happy to keep his link on your site if he is willing to link back to your site. Try this and get quality back-links from related sites. See if you can do the 3-way linking. Backlink from a site to which you haven't linked from yours has more worth.
Establish other related sites and blogs
I love doing this. Apart from giving me some good back-links it also increases the number of sites I own and sooner or later every site start fetching some traffic which means it pays helps me make more money.
I thought the title of this was self explanatory, in case it was not let me explain. Make some sites or blogs with related keywords to your site and get back-links to your site from them. No need to make huge sites. Sites or blogs with 20 to 30 pages will be enough and once it start paying you back through ad revenues or something , you might want to increase the number of pages to earn more.
Link directories
This is the easiest way to get some free backlinks. All you have to do is find some quality free directories, choose a related category for your site and submit your site to that proper related category. As choosing a proper category will increase chances of your link being accepted, it will also insure you get back-link from related keywords which is one of the best SEO practices.
TIP 1: While submitting your sites to link directories, don't forget to write a proper description of your site with some of your keywords in it.
TIP 2: Don't leave the keywords field empty as it is not mandatory.
(The above two tips will ensure you get your keyword from a page with related keywords.)
TIP 3: Keep on changing the text in title tag while submitting to directories so that Google don't take your site for spam.

Some More Ways to Get Free Quality Backlinks
Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarks are the sites that allow you to share sites you like with others or in other words you can maintain your bookmarks and favorites in a way that others can see it. There is a large number of social bookmarking sites on the web. Visit them and get free and easy back-link to your sites from them.
Caution: Don't keep on submitting your own site(s) to them. This will look spammy and some of the social bookmarks might ban you for doing this. Submit other good sites, blogs and pages too.
Tip: Write a good description and a catchy title to get large amount of traffic as well as large number of backlink from them. This way more people will rate your site and you wil get a link-back from their profiles too.
Update:Here are two sites, where you can bookmark links to your own sites, hubs or articles and they won't mind. No need to waste time submitting other sites, submit your own pages and get quality backlinks instantly. Another great thing about these sites is that they share AdSense impressions and revenue with you. So as you generate backlinks to your own pages, at the same time you are earning some money from these sites.

Social Networking
If the search engine bots can crawl a social network, then the back-link is useful otherwise its of no use. Example Search engines can't crawl Orkut so a back-link from Orkut is pretty worthless, in contrast to that search engine bots can access FaceBook pages and thus a backlink from FaceBook might help improve your search engine ranking.
Comments
Commenting gives you a free backlink but don't take it for granted. Try to comment something related to the topic and your comment must add value to the topic. The owner of the article should not think that you haven't even read the article and you are commenting just to get a back-link. Please don't add comments like, "nice info", "great article" etc and get yourself blocked. In order to get more benefits from comments, try to find blogs or articles having same keywords as your site and then comment on them.
Articles
I have kept best for the last! Articles are the best way to get free high quality backlinks. In this method you write an article on an article website and insert a couple of backlinks to your pages either in the body of the article or the resource box depending upon the rules of the website.
RitePad is a handy article directory to get backlinks. You can get a backlink by writing a 100 word post. It is also a revenue sharing website, which means you will get 80% of the total adsense impressions.

Some good advice here. I have found though that my website dropped a few pages in page rank when i linked back to some link exchanges.It is always good to test them one by one as when i removed the link back from this particular exchange, my site was back up to its original rank again.Its the only way to know which ones are of value.
You have provided a comprehensive list here but my problem is not wanting to spend any more time blogging, but I'll try to do some of these things.
Photography seems to interest people most for me but I also do computer art and write short stories in serial form and occasionally introduce some finance or related hubs.

Thanx Dale for pointing this out. I in fact forgot to mention it. Let me make this one thing clear. Exchanging links with sites is not bad for SEO and rankings, the bad thing is exchanging links with sites that are penalized by Google. If you will exchange links with penalized sites, your site will definitely go down in rankings. I will write a hub about how to check if a site is penalized.

Well Katyzz I also have almost the same problem. Although a bit different but more or less the same. I also have the time problem but I want to spend my time blogging and creating sites and don't really want to spend my time finding backlinks as it is quite a waste of time.
I found the solution to this problem by creating new sites/blogs with similar keywords and linking them back to my other sites. This way I can get backlinks as well as create sites. I have mentioned creating new sites for backlinks as a way of getting backlinks above.
Blondepoet you got to work them out as they are becoming necessary part of blogging.
Dohn you can make a residual income from HP, no doubt about it BUT try making your own blog or a website to generate passive income. Look we are getting more and more spammers here on Hub Pages and if this didn't stop, chances are there that HP will get a Google slap or in other words the hubs won't rank high in SERPS(Search Engine Result Pages). Pretty clever advice, However,how many page views do you think your individual site would have to have before getting a Webmaster's attention? Hundreds? thousands? I don't think I could get a webmaster's attention with one hub!

Ms Chievous a few hundred page views a week would get you some decent back links. Yes you got to write a few mote hubs.
Rite now you can start by using other methods of getting back-links and once your hubs start getting traffic you can contact other webmasters for back-links.
I have been using articles, at one time I dealt with 10 different directories and the only one I have seen a backlink show up on the analytics is ezinearticles. The other thing as far as backlinks Google counts all the links from one source as one. The good thing about articles for backlinks is if your articles is published on another site, this will be a unique link.

No, not these comments. If you signout of HubPages and then see this hub. Then you will have an option of adding URL of your site while commenting. That is how you get a back-link to your site through comments. Just like the guy who commented above you has got to his website.
Digg no doubt con bring tons of traffic to your site. Your URLs there are canonical. Since Digg has made this huge change by placing there bar up in the browser, now as you visit any site from Digg you see Digg's URL in the address-bar. So when a search engine bot will climb to your site from Digg, it will keep on getting Digg's URl and not yours as long as its there.
BUT Digg claim that they use canonical tag to give the site some benefit of their link. Some SEO experts believe that having many canonical tags is not a very good SEO practice. Hope I made myself clear. If still there are some questions left, you can ask me.
I am always looking for backlinks to my site. It is a never ending process if you want it to do well.
Well I see it this way, it really looks a never ending process in the start and you have to strive hard to get some quality backlinks but once you get quite a few of them and your site start ranking high in SERPS and becomes an authority site like space.com or Encarta, people will start linking back to you on their own. Once your site is an authority site, you don't ask for links, just like Encarta don't ask for backlinks.

Thanks for the info re the link directories. Have been unsure about whether they work or not. I think I'll give them a try. I started using article marketing about a month ago and it seems to work quite well.

Good hub. I find link exchanges still perform quite well if they are on and for relevant sites to your one. They seem to have less of an impact than they did but still worth investing time.

Its good to see you are already using social media for backlinks and other stuff too which is impressive.
I have always been against automation as you might know search engines and I mean all search engines from Google to Dogpile to AltaVista, every single one of them hates it and will flag your site as spam. Do hire an assistant for link building on the guidelines you provide him/her. Make sure the person knows basics of SEO at least and keep a check on him/her to avoid any kind of penalty search engines might impose.

One way that i have found is that places like godaddy have .info sites on sale for 99 cents and if you get a few of these related to your webstie put some revelent content and then google ads and then a few links to your original website it does give you quality backlinks plus a revenu generatoer once you have sumbitted it back to search engines. great hub I learned some things as well.. and it was easy to read and understand :)

The caffeine update will be devaluing a lot of links that Google does not think are important. If you see a drop in your rankings it can be because of this.

Coachb, all we know about caffeine is based on our assumptions except from that Matt Cutts update over it. And he isn't revealing much about rankings other than that there won't be big changes, although he told about indexing, crawling and UI changes.
Plus I mentioned white hat ways of getting backlinks which won't lose their importance too quickly.
In my opinion caffeine is nothing more than a marketing strategy to cope with Bing!. It won't change Google's algorithm much. You know they keep on changing their algo so there was no need to make such fuss about changing it.

A reciprocal back link is not very strong.
A link from a site like ezinearticles.com can be more powerful than 50 links from an average site.
Use a tool like market samurai to check the SEO competition and take note of the amount of backlinks in the top 10 websites.

There is no harm to have links to other sites if they are based on almost the same keywords as your site. In fact it is good for SEO.
I will agree to this that 3 way linking is better than reciprocal linking.

Great content. Very informative hub. Articles are a good way to gain backlinks but what truly matters more is 'where' your links are placed. Backlinks from authority sites are the best way to gain strong links back to anyone's site. Creating a hub for instance will rank better with google than 20 links on lower PR sites.
It is rare to come across the advice that you have given. Whilst I have read MANY articles about getting backlinks, all of which contain the phrase "Just email the webmaster of similar sites", never has anyone suggested what you have, and your method makes an awful lot of sense.
So, thanks for sharing this with us, it is very much appreciated.

One more tip for when people are commenting on other people's sites is to see if you can get your keywords into the anchor text.
For those who don't know what "anchor text" means, it means the clickable words that the reader sees on top of the link. For example see the text in my name above - that's the anchor text for the link to my site.
The search engines such as Google see links with your keywords in as being more valuable.
For those who don't know what I mean by "keywords", I recommend the 30 day challenge, which is free, and which teaches a lot about making money on the internet.
For articles, I heartily recommend ezinearticles.com - a great place to publish an article that not only gets a link back to your site but will also be seen by lots of people and republished on their sites (together with your link).

Just to add to Isha of "Market Samurai Resources" comment, using anchor text is great for SEO, but in addition I would consider using semantics and varients in your anchor text links. Your site will then appear to have a more natural linking structure in the eyes of google.
Having multiple anchor text has become a necessary thing for ranking higher in SERPS as mentioned in the article above. All blogs do not allow you to post your anchor text while commenting and your comment will be rejected if you put your site's anchor text instead of your name.

This is the best article on this topic on HubPages that I've seen so far. I've spent hours writing quality hubs about a variety of topics in which I am either an expert or a semi-expert, and yet watched them languish from lack of google attention. The backlinks business is something I just haven't had time for, but I intend to use this efficient advice (above) very shortly. A lot of time I received emails from other webmasters that want to exchange links with me, the emails they sent are totally a waste of my time, and the words they used are not friendly. They're more like ultimatum: "PUT MY LINK OR ELSE I WILL DELETE YOURS"...
Yep, they wrote them with Capital Case.
Nobody wants to get threat! As soon I got those emails, I delete them. And the worst part, those websites don't even have a PR 1 from Google. So glad I read this, keep it up.

Ok I'm using stumbleupon right now as a way to increase traffic. I've been joining groups and I have also found some great websites along the way. I will admit I started it for the sole interest in increasing traffic but I have found that these social bookmarking sites help you find great resources for you site as well as well as finding some great link exchange partners.

This is a great article! ;P but no, really it is! I just create a niche blog and haven't had luck with it being indexed by google yet even though it has lots of info, no ads, and is updated daily. With my main site I didn't have a problem with it getting indexed and after reading your article I realize it was because of the article marketing I did early on. I suppose I should take one of my blog posts and turn it into an article and submit it to the directories! Thanks for the tips and ideas!

Thanks for the tips on how to get backlinks. I really like getting backlinks from article directories to because you get free trageted traffic and a solid backlink but it is possibly the most work.
It's simply a matter of persistence! keep chugging along. One tool I use is Backlink Checker and see what my competitors are doing. You can learn a LOT from them!

Backlink is simply a link to another page. While composing or editing your hub, click the chain button to add a link to someone else's hub. All you have to do is give the URL to their hub. For instance URL to this hub is http://hubpages.com/hub/Get-Easy-Free-Backlinks/.

I have one business site for which I really like to get back links because it is my selling site. I have no ads from google or other such at this stage of the game, since I've been taught it's not smart to send people off your site. I do have a links section at the back and I use it to link to other sites I just like or that are in some way related to my site. I also have links to my affiliates and to relevant hubs and lenses and blogs. Since this site gets more traffic than anything I'm linking to, it helps send traffic to my other writing sites.
I get lots of emails from other webmeisters wanting link exchanges. Most are polite, but most I decline because I don't want to send customers to their sites, which often don't get as much traffic as mine. I get some good back-links from universities and other customers who have decided I'm a good reliable source for their readers. Those are the kind I most want. For the most part, I avoid link exchanges.
My main method of getting back-links is having a number of sites, as you suggested. I'd much rather write than look up keywords, write other webmeisters, etc. I haven't tried the article sites yet because I lack time. That's next on my list, but I don't know if I'd be good at that kind of writing.

Yes its a bit hard to get backlinks by writing to webmasters. And I personally love getting backlinks through my own websites.

Great tips here. The social bookmark sites have always been good with me.
The blogs that I like the most is where they spam so much, then you just do a simple check and see that all the links have a nofollow in them :)

I am in the process of updating my web site, and one of things that i would like to have is back links to my site.
So the idea of putting links on my site, leaving them for some time and then sending an e-mail to the web master may be something that would prove be successful for me!

Very interesting post though I don't think you stressed enough that the PR of the website or directory isn't as important as the content surrounding your link. After all if you have a link from a PR 10 website about pregnancy for your gaming website it's not going to do much for you in the search engines.
However a link from a PR 5 website about gaming to your gaming website will do wonders.

I keep reading all of these hubs about back links and the like and find that some make sense to me and others do not. This one has good advice. And yes I did read it.
