This is my motto: “If you can't sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there and worrying; it’s the worry that gets you, not the loss of sleep.” I am quite surprise to learn that it was already quoted by Dale Carnegie. Earnest Hemmingway, or Winston Churchill – can’t remember which one of the two - had a similar motto. I know one needs sleep, but there is so many exiting things to learn/read/do instead of sleep. So I am hyperactive and sleep only when I’m totally exhausted. I’ve bookmarked this. You are really doing me a favor, Ultimate Hubber. I'm an aspiring writer, and ever since I began a hopeful novel and became attached to it, sleep has become all but impossible before about 5am! However, I really enjoy Insomnia, and all the beneficiary quotes above are very, very accurate!! Oh, and part of the reason for me not wanting to sleep is one: I don't like waking up in the morning. and two: I can't stop thinking about writing!

I can understand that. When I am working over an idea, a passion of mine, I also can't sleep.

This is another sleepless night for me but due to a completely different reason.

So, what do they say about Cancers(zodiac sign)? That they are sensitive and get hurt very easily. I am one of those sensitive emotional Cancers.

I believe that a lot of the other comments posted are true. One would be" "Insomnia is 'funny' only when it's not happening to us," that is very true. The other day I had a test for my AP bio class and I think the studying took longer than the test itself (2x). Uh! Life's a drag. I need my meds. Bye. (:

I definitely feel like half of you are clueless. Being inspired to the point of being unable to sleep seems like mania, while choosing to remain awake because of your inspiration is just dedication. And it's ridiculous to tout all the benefits of the inability to sleep. For the people who hate sleeping and love getting things done, good for you that you get everything accomplished that you possibly can before dropping off to sleep. But what about those of all us who have to do all that and then aren't able to sleep after? Our bodies don't get to conveniently shut down when we finally decide we're done. I've been to both extremes- being unable to stop sleeping (think sixteen hour nights)and then being completely unable to sleep (two to four hour nights interrupted constantly); and there is never an in-between for me. And the truth is that not being able to control your body or even have it function as it ought to is frustrating and wears down on your mental capabilities, no matter which extreme you happen to be at (obviously I'm suffering from insomnia at this point). So while I will be writing a research paper I would have put off if I could have managed to be asleep at three in the morning, I'm going to be writing it with less ease than if I could have put it off until about eight hours from now. And perhaps had I been somewhat rested, I may have found a more diplomatic way to express my sentiments, but as it is I'm damn tired and more frustrated having looked at this than I was before.

Rhi, the world record for sleep deprivation (without stimulants) is 264 hours, or 11 days. Either you're lying about your 9 day stretch, or you should push it a bit further and win yourself a spot in The Genis.

Overall I support the primarily positive approach that the bloggers of this page have taken towards the condition that is insomnia, however, I find it drastically easier to relate with S.Bell's frustration over actually having insomnia. In its earlier stages "insomnia" can be appear rather palatable, particularly when one finds that he/she is capable of remaining focused/productive for longer than most, while still retaining the ability to fall sleep when the work is finished, that is, before he/she starts reaching the point of extreme exhaustion and still cannot make the transition into sleep - true insomnia. There have been 5 occasions in my life where I've [unintentionally] gone 4 days without sleep. At that point, the normal feeling of heavy eyes has morphed into a constant sensation comparable to having worn-down sandpaper on the insides of one's eyelids. This is accompanied by very little physical energy, short-term memory loss, distinct visual/audible hallucinations and on a number of occasions I even had weird and senseless visions. Sounds kind of fun right? It is, but only mildly. It becomes a major annoyance when you've got work or school slowly drawing nearer as the night reaches its end and all you've thought about for 5 hours between lying in bed and sitting up is how you're simply too tired to study effectively and really, REALLY need a good night's sleep, just to find that you literally spent 5 hours doing nothing, except thinking. Cognitive thought is wonderful, sure, but like anything it can be over done. I would NOT recommend that any of you pursue training to your body to mimic a true insomniacs sleep cycle (or lack there of) because you will likely find that converting back can be astoundingly difficult. So, unless you are a poet, song writer, painter, author of fiction, or anything intensely creative, you will probably not benefit from the long-term repercussions that shadow the inability to something as simply and utterly natural as falling asleep.

i started working nights about 4 months ago an out of state half the time. insomnia has definitely become apart of my life iv read quotes on just about everything with my time an it was not till i read this tonight with all you other people who are getting stuff done that i realized i should be doing the same haha what a break through

Insomnia is the INABILITY to sleep. If you're not sleeping by choice, you don't have insomnia.. While i guess there may be positives to it, generally it's just absolutely awful. I'd give anything to have even one night of decent sleep.
