What is a Milk Snake
Milk snake is a species of king snake. There are 25 subspecies among the milk snakes. Commonly known Scarlet Kingsnake is one of its sub species.
Names
There is an early myth about milk snakes that they suck cow udders to get milk, thus the common name milk snakes. This myth is entirely false as these snakes do not possess physical capabilities to suck milk. Their French name is Couleuvre tachetée, while in Spanish they are called Culebra-real coralillo.
Distribution of Milk Snakes
Milk snakes are distributed from southeastern Canada, through most of the continental United States, to Central America, down to western Ecuador and northern Venezuela of northern South America.
Size
These snakes normally grow 20 to 60 inches long.
Diet
They are opportunistic hunters. Young milk snakes normally feed on slugs, insects, and earthworms. Adult milksnake's diet includes lizards, birds, bird eggs, snakes, frogs, fish and small mammals.
Life span
The milk snakes typically live for around 12 years.
Reproduction:
They lay a clutch of about 10 eggs. After incubation of about 2 months their young are born and come out into this world.

Ahhhhhh! I jumped back when I saw that snake! I thought the title of this hub was "Milk Shakes"! Guess now you know what was on my mind! Nice touch with the French and Spanish translation! Very posh...
LOL....it's funny, because I too thought this hub was about Milkshakes at first. I did at least realize it was snakes before I got here so I didn't jump. But whether it was milkshakes or milk snakes it made me curious enough to come see. :)
Of course, he's not venomous because "Red touches yellow, he's a dead fellow, red touches black, friend of Jack"
If you look at some of the ads stuffed snakes seem to be a very popular item or kids. Your hubs are exposing many different types of snakes, very interesting.

Thanks for sharing!
I can remember when I was young, growing up on a farm in the southern rural areas of AL learning the difference between the kingsnake and the coral snake. They made us (kindegarten) memorize and recite:
"Red on Black, friend of Jack ..
Red on Yellow, kill a fellow.."
They wanted us to know they difference by identifying the pattern of their rings.
Great hub!
Hi Ultimate Hubber, I have never known of the milk snake and immediately i read your title my thinking was that they suck or drink milk and wanted to find out from which animal do they get the miilk. Only to realized it is myth, great for sharing
At first I read the title as "Milk shake", then saw the display picture of a snake and was like, "Apparently I am incapable of reading."
A milk snake's diet made me loose all appetite for lunch. I kept hoping that the snake's name had something to do with milk, then I read the hub.
It was very informative, though I wish you would write a hub about yourself. I want to know a little about my exquisite follower. :)
Well my father and I found a very small milk snake in our basement. It is about 7in. long and maybe a centimeter in diameter and were wondering what kind of things would it eat at a young age if we wanted to raise then release it when it gets larger.
thanks for the info i have a huge project on this snake so you have given me a jumbo favor but don't worry i don't plagiarize ;) thanks again dude! ;););););)
i have got some info in my head about these snakes cheers.
